2024 Ballot Initiatives Leading the Fight Against Animal Exploitation and Cruelty in California, Colorado, and Oregon
This November, transformative initiatives are on the ballot in California, Colorado, and Oregon that could significantly impact animal welfare and combat animal exploitation. Here’s what each measure aims to accomplish:
1. Denver, Colorado: Ban on Slaughterhouses and Fur Sales
Denver residents will vote on Measure 309, introduced by Pro Animal Future, which would make Denver the first U.S. city to ban both slaughterhouses and the sale of fur products. This includes closing the nation's largest lamb slaughterhouse, where an estimated 1,000 lambs are killed daily, often in inhumane conditions documented in undercover footage. Measure 309 aims to curb these practices and hold businesses accountable, highlighting that true animal welfare begins with the elimination of exploitation.
Read about an undercover investigation by Direct Action Everywhere which revealed horrific violence and unlawful animal cruelty at Superior Farms.
2. Sonoma County, California: Ban on Large Factory Farms
In Sonoma County, Measure J—part of the Coalition to End Factory Farming—would prohibit all Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) in the area, effectively closing 21 industrial animal farms and impacting nearly 3 million animals. Supported by In Defense of Animals, this measure seeks to eliminate widespread animal suffering within factory farms and calls for a shift away from intensive animal agriculture altogether.
3. Oregon: Ban on All Forms of Animal Cruelty (Planned for 2026)
Though scheduled for 2026, Initiative Petition 28 (IP28)Â is gathering momentum as the most far-reaching measure yet. With over 35,000 signatures in support, IP28 seeks to eliminate all exemptions from animal cruelty laws in Oregon. This would extend protections to animals currently used in food production, entertainment, research, and hunting. IP28 also includes provisions for a Humane Transition Fund, offering food assistance, retraining for affected workers, and supporting rewilding efforts.
Each of these initiatives highlights the growing movement toward ending animal exploitation. Whether you are voting in these areas or supporting from afar, this is a crucial time to drive positive change for animals.
