Artist Interview: EDGE

Updated: Jul 21

Featured on The Compassion Project: Songs for Animals, Humans, and Earth Justice Texas-based rock band EDGE brings unflinching intensity and emotional depth to The Compassion Project with their featured track “START ALL OVER.” Known for blending hard-hitting rock with messages of truth, awareness, and justice, EDGE has spent nearly three decades building a loyal fanbase through relentless authenticity. Formed in Pearland in 1996, the band has released five studio albums, performed alongside Hoobastank, Fuel, and Blue October, and seen their music featured in films and video games. With their new album Latency Vol. I and continued creative momentum, EDGE channels personal loss and social discontent into anthems that speak to a generation looking for something real.

Was there something or someone who was the "catalyst" for you to go into music? For us, the catalyst wasn’t just one person—it was a mix of raw emotion, restlessness, and the need to be heard. Growing up in Texas, music became our outlet when words fell short. But if we had to name a defining influence, it would be the energy of the '90s rock scene—bands that weren’t afraid to speak uncomfortable truths and challenge the system. That gave us permission to turn our anger, confusion, and passion into something real. Music became our language, our therapy, and our way to connect with people who felt the same way.

Let's get this out of the way. What is the craziest thing that has ever happened in your music career? We have many adventurous moments in our musical career. We were blessed to travel to different cities and states where, at times, you had a sense of no consequences or authority. If speaking positively though, one of craziest things is having our music featured in a video game and having people from all over the world take part in that experience. It was an amazing experience to see that people from across the globe were enjoying our music.

What has been the highlight of your music path? The highlight has always been the connection—with each other, with the fans, and with the message behind the music. Whether it was hearing our song in a video game, sharing the stage with bands we grew up listening to, or seeing someone in the crowd scream lyrics we wrote in a garage—it’s those moments that remind us why we started. But more recently, finishing Latency Vol. I after so many years apart, and then losing our brother Carl Beatty, brought it all into focus. That album became more than just music—it became a tribute, a return, and a reminder that this journey still matters. That’s the real highlight: knowing the fire is still there.

How do you approach songwriting or what is your creative process like? For me, songwriting usually starts with a feeling—something that needs to be said. I get inspired by so many things: personal experiences, current events, even just a single conversation that sticks with me. I also try to put myself in other people’s shoes, so the lyrics aren’t always just from my perspective. I want the songs to feel honest, even if they’re uncomfortable. Sometimes the music comes first, sometimes it's the words—but it always begins with some kind of emotional spark. From there, it’s about shaping that into something that people can connect with.

Do you have a new release? Yes! Our latest release is a cover of Everybody Wants to Rule the World by Tears for Fears. We’ve always appreciated great music from artists across genres, and Tears for Fears has had a huge impact on our musical journey. Covering this iconic song was a challenge we embraced wholeheartedly, and we hope we did it justice. The track is now streaming on all major platforms—check it out and let us know what you think!

If you could share the stage or a song session with an artist, who would it be?There are so many talented artists out there it’s hard to pick just one! We’ve always respected musicians who bring authenticity and passion to their craft, whether they’re legends or rising stars. Sharing the stage or a session with anyone who values real emotion and storytelling in music would be incredible. That said, collaborating with artists who push boundaries and inspire change—whether in rock, alternative, or beyond—would be a dream come true.

For fans who have never heard your music, how would you describe your sound?EDGE’s sound is a blend of raw rock energy and thoughtful storytelling. We mix gritty guitar riffs with emotional vocals, creating music that’s both powerful and introspective. Our style draws from many rock influences but isn’t afraid to explore progressive and alternative elements. Whether it’s driving rhythms or melodic hooks, we aim to connect deeply with listeners who appreciate authenticity and passion in their music.

What is your favorite part about being an artist? Is it songwriting, performing, producing...something else? For me, the favorite part is creating something from nothing—writing songs that express what’s inside and turning ideas into music. But that process wouldn’t be complete without sharing it with fans. There’s nothing like seeing people connect with your music, whether it’s live at a show or through headphones on their own time. Creating and then sharing—that’s the heart of being an artist.

When you are not doing music, what else do you enjoy doing? We’re all fathers and we really enjoy spending time with our families. Being present for our kids and sharing everyday moments with the people we love is something we value deeply. It keeps us grounded and reminds us why we do what we do.

What is coming up in the future for you? EDGE is currently working on new music, and we’re excited about where it’s headed. We’ve been exploring new sounds and ideas while staying true to what defines us. Fans can expect more releases, fresh content, and continued creativity. The journey continues—and we’re just getting started on the next chapter.

Please add any additional information you would like fans to know. It’s been—and continues to be—an honor and a blessing to create music that connects with people. We’re grateful for every listener who’s taken the time to dive into our songs, share them, or simply feel something from them. As fathers and lifelong musicians, we pour everything we have into what we create. EDGE is more than just a band—it’s a brotherhood built on passion, perseverance, and purpose. Thank you for being part of the journey with us. There's more to come.
