Featured on The Compassion Project: Songs for Animals, Humans, and Earth Justice
Based in the vibrant arts hub of Asheville, North Carolina, singer-songwriter Kim Smith is known for her soulful voice, poetic lyrics, and deeply introspective songwriting. Drawing on influences like Mary Chapin Carpenter, Etta James, Amos Lee, and Eva Cassidy, Kim’s music reflects emotional authenticity and spiritual depth. Her track “Human,” featured on The Compassion Project, was inspired by the passing of her beloved companion animal, Barley, and offers a powerful meditation on awakening and empathy. A frequent collaborator with producers Chris Rosser and Dean Miller, Kim continues to craft music that honors the interconnectedness of all life.
Was there something or someone who was the "catalyst" for you to go into music?Yes, one of my soulmates! Crashed into me, broke me wide open. The desire to write music and lyrics pushed me over the edge into singing. Maybe it dragged me!!
Let's get this out of the way. What is the craziest thing that has ever happened in your music career?
Played at a library in South Carolina - when we arrived all of the posters / marketing had myself and my drummer David. It read… Come join us. Kim has shared the stage with Melissa Ethridge and Eddie Rabbit! I almost passed out!! They booked the wrong Kim Smith. Evidently there are two of us!! lol!!
What has been the highlight of your music path? Working with Chris Rosser/Hollow Reed studio. Recording with Dean Miller in Nashville.

How do you approach songwriting or what is your creative process like?
It approaches me. Hopefully I am aware and in the present moment to catch it when it comes in. Songs really write themselves if I move out of the way and allow it.
Do you have a new release?
I will be releasing a few new songs for an upcoming show at the Grey Eagle in Asheville, N.C. August 28th!
If you could share the stage or a song session with an artist, who would it be?Great question…there are many: Mary Chapin Carpenter, Miranda Lambert
For fans who have never heard your music, how would you describe your sound? A little bit different! Ha Ha! Introspective maybe? 🤔
What is your favorite part about being an artist? Is it songwriting, performing, producing...something else? Hands down - Songwriting!! Producing and collaborating. Especially when the energy is there.
When you are not doing music, what else do you enjoy doing?
Volunteering at rescues, spending time with my furries.
What is coming up in the future for you? December of 2020 my golden Barley crossed over and he sent this song back to me. I had to learn who I was without him here with me. Hardest and the most worth it of an experience I’ve ever had. Songs guided me into all the places inside I needed to shine a little light on and heal. In the metaphysical I am manifesting a healing retreat called Barley's Sanctuary. It’s going to raise the vibration so high we may just make it through the portal!! New earth of no suffering! Only love.
Please add any additional information you would like fans to know. Be good to yourself!! Love who you are in every moment no matter what. Try to do the same for others. I miss the mark … a lot!
