Featured on The Compassion Project: Songs for Animals, Humans, and Earth Justice

Award-winning folk-rock singer-songwriter Rocky Michaels brings a call to action with his powerful new song “Our Time is Now,” featured on The Compassion Project. With a reputation for poetic storytelling and heartfelt performances, Rocky has released over 35 tracks and earned accolades like Album of the Year from Elite Music Awards and nominations from the Josie Music Awards. Known for his thoughtful lyrics and genre-blending style, his music serves as a reminder that even small acts of compassion can shape a better future for animals, people, and the planet.
Was there something or someone who was the "catalyst" for you to go into music?I wouldn’t say there was a single defining catalyst—music has just always been a part of me. I still remember the excitement of buying my very first vinyl album—Boston—back in the ’70s. Growing up with a piano in the house, I’d often sit down and try to figure out my favorite songs by ear. Long before the internet, it was either ride your bike, head to the creek, play ball—or play piano. I would often do all the above!
Let's get this out of the way. What is the craziest thing that has ever happened in your music career?
Although I’ve been playing instruments since I was five, I didn’t start releasing music until 2019. At first, it was just a way to express myself and leave behind a kind of “living legacy” for my kids—like Dad’s quirky pearls of wisdom in song form. But in 2020, just one year later, I was completely humbled and honored to be named Male Artist of the Year by CFAB Music Realm. That unexpected recognition really lit a new fire in me.
What has been the highlight of your music path?
See above. 😊 But truly, that early recognition, combined with the positive response from listeners, continues to be a huge source of motivation.
How do you approach songwriting or what is your creative process like? I’ve never been one to sit down and say, “OK, time to write a song.” Inspiration tends to strike out of nowhere, which is why I rely heavily on my phone’s audio notes to capture fragments—melodies, lyrics, themes—on the fly. Over time, I revisit those ideas, never knowing which one might ignite something. I’m a big believer in the power of lyrics—every song I release is a reflection of who I am and what I stand for, so I spend a lot of time shaping the message.
Do you have a new release?
Yes! My most recent release is called Hey Now Friday, which dropped on July 11th. It’s a feel-good, weekend anthem—less introspective than some of my other songs, but intentionally so. Sometimes it’s nice to just have fun with a track. That said, my upcoming release in August dives back into a more thoughtful, reflective tone—and I can’t wait to share it.
If you could share the stage or a song session with an artist, who would it be?Wow, tough one! There are so many artists who’ve shaped me. I’d love to trade piano licks with Billy Joel, sing one of Paul Simon’s lyrical gems with him, or experience the energy of a Springsteen performance. Collaborating vocally with Zac Brown would be incredible—and sharing a session with Tim McGraw just seems like it’d be such a cool dude vibe!
For fans who have never heard your music, how would you describe your sound?
I like to say I’m a poor man’s James Taylor. 😊 My voice is mellow, but I’ve been told it carries a soulful quality. Paired with acoustic guitar, my performances tend to feel intimate—like I’m just having a conversation with the listener through music.
What is your favorite part about being an artist?
Each part of the creative journey has its own magic. I love that moment when a new song is born and all the possibilities it holds. Performing live is also a big joy for me—connecting with audiences, sharing stories, and watching people respond to the music in real time… that’s really special.
When you are not doing music, what else do you enjoy doing?
I’ve been a triathlon enthusiast for over 20 years now. I’ve completed 4 full Ironman races and 20 half-Ironman events. It’s become a lifestyle, and I definitely believe the discipline and mental endurance it takes has helped me stay focused and balanced in other areas of life, including music.
What is coming up in the future for you?
I’ll continue performing around the greater San Francisco Bay Area—mostly solo sets and often at wineries, which I really enjoy. I also have new songs lined up for release every few months. Finally, I just recently got accepted as a voting member for the Recording Academy. So, I now have a voice in the GRAMMY Awards process and the opportunity to advocate for positive change, uplift fellow artists, and continue growing on my own musical path.
Is there anything else you’d like fans to know? Thank you to all the followers, subscribers and fans of Rocky Michaels Music! It continues to be an honor to share with you and I hope to continue doing so for as long as I can. Especially during these divisive times, music continues to serve as that common denominator that can help bring us all a little closer.
